Open Space and Recreation Strategy

Waverley’s parks and beaches are world renowned, known for spectacular ocean views and green parklands amongst beautiful beaches and bushland gullies. They provide respite from city living and opportunities for the community to connect and live healthy and active lifestyles.

To ensure these valued assets continue to meet the needs of the community, Council has prepared an Open Space and Recreation Strategy (OSRS).

The Strategy informs the long-term planning, management and development direction of open space and recreation areas within Waverley, including parks, reserves and beaches and associated facilities such as sporting grounds and courts, amenities facilities and walking tracks.

The aim of the OSRS will be to improve the lives of existing and future Waverley communities and visitors, by delivering infrastructure that supports health and well-being outcomes and encompasses biodiversity values.

Waverley is highly urbanised and challenged by limited potential for additional public open space acquisition. There is currently a strong reliance on regional facilities to meet demand for many recreational and sporting activities. To address these challenges, the OSRS provides a cohesive framework to help Council maximise existing open space and recreation areas and identify available opportunities for future use.

The OSRS will build upon work already undertaken by Council in this space, including extensive community consultation completed for the Waverley Community Strategic Plan and the Plans of Management we have in place for many of our Parks such as Bondi Park, Beach and Pavilion, Bronte park and Beach, Tamarama Park, Thomas Hogan Reserve and Waverley Park and Pavilion.
