Our ocean pools and cleaning schedules

Bronte pool during cleaning

Waverley Council maintains two free ocean pools in the Waverley LGA to ensure they remain clean, safe and enjoyable for swimming and recreation.

Because both pools are filled directly from the ocean, they require weekly cleaning. During cleaning, pools are temporarily closed, drained and refilled in line with tidal conditions.

Pool locations

Bronte Ocean Pool

Situated at the southern end of Bronte Beach near Bronte Park, Bronte Pool (or Bronte Baths) is a historic 30-metre rock pool carved into the sandstone cliffs. Easily accessible along the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, it is ideal for lap swimming, with a shallow section for children and changing rooms and showers nearby.

North Bondi Children’s Pool

A popular option for families with young children, the North Bondi Children’s Pool (or Mermaid Pool) is located at the northern end of Bondi Beach near Biddigal Reserve. A children’s playground, barbecue stations and public toilets are located nearby.

There is an additional rock pool called Walley Weekes Pool behind the children’s pool, which can be used for protected swimming at high tide. This tidal pool empties with each low tide and does not require cleaning.

Opening hours

Both pools are open daily. However, they close once a week for scheduled cleaning.

Cleaning times

Bronte Ocean Pool is closed on Wednesdays for cleaning, while North Bondi Children’s Pool is closed on Thursdays.

Each pool is closed for cleaning for four hours before low tide. If low tide falls in the morning, the pool closes from 5am. If low tide falls in the afternoon, the pool closes from 10am. Refer to cleaning schedules for each pool below.
