Council and culture

Waverley is geographically one of Sydney’s smallest Local Government Areas but features some of Sydney’s most iconic cultural landmarks, including the beloved Bondi Pavilion.

Local government is central to enabling people to participate in the arts while fostering culture and creativity. In a climate of expanding global homogeneity, local production and participation in arts and culture is increasingly important and councils serve an important role in delivering, funding, hosting, supporting and promoting arts and culture in local communities.

Waverley Council has a proud history of supporting the cultural and creative life of its community, dating as far back as the famous deck-chair concerts held in the early 1900s. Today, Council’s Arts & Culture and Events teams work hard to support local creativity, entertainment and experiences.

The Waverley Arts and Culture Plan 2021–2026 sets out five key goals:

  1. Our diverse and ongoing stories are shared and celebrated.
  2. We have a vibrant network of spaces and places for arts and cultural participation, production and experience.
  3. Creative participation is flourishing and inclusive.
  4. Showcasing and supporting our creative sector and community.
  5. Developing strong partnerships to facilitate growth for our cultural and creative sector.

Council works towards achieving these goals by forming strong partnerships in the creative sector, as well as supporting and advocating for local creatives of varying experience levels. Our vibrant spaces allow for creativity to be supported and showcased through the production of small and large events.
