Festival of the Winds 2025

Date: Sunday, 14 September 2025

Time: 11am – 4pm

Location: Bondi Pavilion, Bondi Beach

Australia’s most anticipated kite flying event is back at Bondi Beach on Sunday, 14 September.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy, from kite shows to beautiful coastal scenes, as well as some of the best cultural food and entertainment from around the world.

The Australian Kite Flying Society (AKFS) will be bringing spectacular kite shows to Bondi once again, featuring the cream of the crop of Australia’s kite makers and flyers who will amaze and impress you.

You can also get involved with the kite flying by bringing your own, purchasing one at a stall or creating a sky-high creation at one of our kite making workshops.

The iconic Bondi Pavilion will host a variety of cultural showcases, just like it did at the original Festival of the Winds in 1978.

Waverley Council is pleased to present this event alongside the AKFS. We can’t wait to see you at one of Sydney's most colourful festivals!

Program Highlights

The Festival of the Winds is a great day out for the whole family.

Festival of the Winds would be nothing without kites! The professional kite displays from the AKS (Australian Kite Flyers Society), create the days magic with their large, hand-made kites of all shapes, sizes and colours.

A true spectacle against the backdrop of one of the world’s most famous beaches.  Join in by buying a kite from one of our kite-stalls in Bondi Park, fly your own kite in our general public flying areas or just watch the ebb and flow of the colourful skies while listening to our local Eastside Radio DJs.

With great acts throughout the day, the Mainstage is where you can sit on the grass, be entertained and look out over the ocean of kites.

Special guests this year include Cianna Walker and Olivia Coe Fox, a First Nations duo making waves with their powerful vocals, harmonies, and deep connection to culture. Known for their dynamic and heartfelt presence on stage, they’ve performed alongside some of Australia’s most iconic artists, including Guy Sebastian, William Barton, Christine Anu, and Dami Im.

Cianna, a proud Walbunja and Gumbaynggirr woman and Olivia, a proud Wiradjuri woman, bring heart, soul and powerful vocals to their performances.

Together, Cianna and Olivia create music that celebrates language, identity, Country, and community.

The festival Forecourt Stage is full of great entertainment from our local schools and groups including Bondi Brass, Black Joak Morris, Rose Bay Secondary College and Bondi Public School music groups, 100% Dance and the exhilarating Tap Pups.

Festival favourites Feel Free Dance will be back again this year, not only with a spectacular show, but they will also be running a workshop to teach us how to Latin dance like a pro, and then come back to the stage once again to run an all-in dance social.

There’s even more activity this year in our Kid’s Courtyard Area at the rear of the Pav!  Learn some circus skills with Circus Works, play some lawn games, get your face painted, make your own Things with Wings in the Bondi Pavilion Pottery Studios, come and see a short film or just sit on the grass and enjoy the family-friendly tunes from our local Eastside Radio DJ’s.

Or take a stroll in Bondi Park and witness some of the amazing skills from our colourful roaming performers, Beeswax and Bottlecaps and DanceCircus, visit our popular petting zoo and kids rides and a host of delicious food stalls – there’s something for the whole family at this year’s Festival of the Winds.

Witness the beauty of the dancing brolgas in Anna-Wili Highfield’s life-sized installation, Mating Dance, paying homage to Australia’s principal dancing bird.

Crafted from cotton paper and brass, the sculptures are suspended in a gesture of call, response, and mimicry. The works and accompanied by Bree Van Reyk’s sound piece adding another beautiful level to the exhibition.

Come into the gallery to see this striking exhibition and then join in for some origami and collage workshops running throughout the day.

Join us down on the sand as we commemorate 25 years since the gold medal win on Bondi Beach for the Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship, with special guest and commentator Olympic Gold Medallist Kerri Pottharst.

Expect a fun and thrilling bout, pitting Bondi and Manly against each other to see who will be victorious and take home the 25 Year Commemoration Cup.

Stay until the end for your chance to learn from the professional athletes and compete in friendly game.
