York Rd and Darley Rd Intersection Upgrade
Waverley Council has received funding through the Federal and State Governments' Road Safety Program to upgrade the intersection of York Road and Darley Road.
This project will make the intersection safer for pedestrians and bike riders and will involve:
- Replacing 19 light poles along York Road (between Darley Rd and Queens Park Rd) with new multifunction poles, and undergrounding existing overhead street lighting
- Removing the existing slip lane from Darley Road into York Road
- Realigning the kerb and widening the footpath area at the entrance to Centennial Park to create more space for pedestrians and bike riders
- Minor landscaping works, and other civil works at the north-east and west intersection corners
Construction will be staged with electrical works (replacing the 19 lights poles between Queens Park Road and Darley Road) starting first. The remaining works will then take place to upgrade the intersection.
Construction Update - February 2024
We are happy to announce that the intersection works on the York Rd and Darley Rd Upgrade have been finalised. The expanded cobblestone entrance to Centennial Park has been laid, improving access and safety for pedestrian and bike-users. Minor works and landscaping such as turfing will be completed shortly.
Further streetlight upgrades will be finalised in the next few months. We thank you for your patience and understanding while this project has been in progress.
Construction Update - October 2023
The works on the York Rd and Darley Rd Intersection Upgrade are nearing completion. Comprehensive traffic infrastructure upgrades are now in place and road resheeting is complete. Over the next few weeks, the footpath and cobblestone works will be finalised and soon the community will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safer pedestrian and bike-user friendly intersection for all users.
Construction Update - September 2023
Due to additional construction and weather delays, the projected completion date for the York Rd and Darley Rd Intersection Upgrade is expected to be in October 2023.
We thank you for your patience while construction works near completion.
Construction Update - August 2023
Nightworks resumed on 13 August on the York Rd and Darley Rd Intersection Upgrade and are expected to be completed in September, 2023. Night work is scheduled to occur on Sunday -Thursday nights between 9pm-5am. Due to the additional upgrades, there are expected to be approximately three weeks of night works with some overlapping day works during this period, weather permitting.
Disturbance will be minimised where possible and loud-noise activities such as jack hammering and saw cutting will not occur after 11pm.
Subsequent to the night works, there will be a further two weeks of day works at the intersection to complete the upgrade, between 7am-5pm, Monday - Friday, and 8am – 1pm Saturdays, if required.
During works, please be mindful of the changed traffic conditions and follow the guidance of trained Traffic Controllers.
Construction Update - June 2023
Due to existing infrastructure deficiencies, additional upgrade works are required on site. As a result, works to the intersection at York and Darley Rd will be delayed for up to 4 weeks. Further updates will be provided regarding the resumption of works. Thank you for your patience and apologies for any disruption this may cause.
Construction Update - Nightworks begin 28 May 2023
Civeco, the contractor engaged to deliver works on the York Rd and Darley Rd Intersection Upgrade is scheduled to commence nightworks on 28 May 2023. Nightworks are expected to last two weeks, weather permitting and will occur Sunday-Thursday nights between 9am-5pm. Disruption to residents will be minimised where possible and loud-noise activities such as jack hammering and saw cutting will not occur after 11pm. Please be aware of changed traffic conditions during construction and follow the guidance of trained Traffic Control Personnel.
