Air pollution

Air pollution can include smoke, odour, dust and aerosols. The extent to which people may be affected by air pollution can vary considerably from inconvenience to breathing difficulties and asthma attacks.

Council investigates reported incidences of air pollution and enforces compliance with the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 where required. The Act helps to determine where a particular activity is or has been carried out in an environmentally unsatisfactory manner and the measures that can be taken to reduce or prevent further air pollution.

Council officers also conduct regular environmental audits of industrial buildings and premises to ensure they are meeting environmental standards.
