Hair, beauty & skin penetration

Waverley Council has about 150 hairdressers and premises where skin penetration procedures are carried out that are regularly inspected by Environmental Health Officers. Procedures include:

  • Pedicure (including removal of dead skin)
  • Manicure (including acrylic, gel nails, cutting of cuticles and skin wicks)
  • Tattooing
  • Hairdressing
  • Body piercing (including ear piercing)
  • Beauty treatment/therapy (eg skin lacing, removal of dead skin and black head extraction)
  • Acupuncture
  • Any other activity which includes skin penetration.

These premises are inspected annually. Premises are checked for compliance with the public health legislation and associated codes and guidelines that deal with issues such as cleanliness, construction, sterilisation of equipment and usage practices and personal hygiene of staff.

Council registration

All businesses that carry out beauty and skin penetration procedures must be registered with Council. To register your business, please complete the new business or change of ownership application form for hair, beauty and skin penetration premises.

Inspection fees

An inspection fee is charged in accordance with Council's Pricing Policy, Fees & Charges if Council's Environmental Health Officers are required to reinspect the salon.
