Waverley Park Upgrades

Project update -  July 2023

We’re excited to see the playground take shape on-site following the completion of demolition works and the installation of underground services.  The team are now working hard installing retaining walls and footpaths to create the level spaces the playground equipment will sit on, including the new rocket and launch tower. Play equipment will start being installed in the coming month through to spring, with the goal to have the playground ready for summer in late November, weather permitting.

Background

Council is expanding and upgrading the play space, and relocating the existing fitness station off Park Parade, in Waverley Park, Bondi. This project also involves the replacement of pathway lighting to make the park a more welcoming space for the whole community to enjoy.

Construction by Hibernian Contracting Pty Ltd began in February 2023 and is expected to take ten months, weather permitting.

Work hours will be from 7am–5pm, Monday to Friday and 8am–1pm on Saturdays (if required). During construction, the existing playground and fitness station will be closed.

This project is envisaged in the Waverley Park Plan of Management and Masterplan, for which community consultation took place at the end of 2021.

Works will involve installing new play equipment, exercise machines, seating ,park lighting, tree-planting and landscaping.

In 2022, two separate community consultations were completed before the concept designs for the play space and fitness station were finalised.

The upgraded play space will feature:

  • 2 x embankment slides
  • Nature and adventure play areas
  • Musical play
  • Rocket ship and launch control play tower
  • Active play areas (swings, spinners and see-saw with accessible and inclusive options)
  • Toddler play area
  • Water play
  • Rope climb for teens

We’re relocating the existing fitness station to an area of the park that is protected by large trees, has a flat level surface, is not next to nearby homes and is currently unused. The new fitness station will have compact, multi-use equipment suitable for cross training, strength training with body weight and cardio exercise.

The rest of Waverley Park will remain open for public use and enjoyment and we will do our best to minimise disruptions in the park during construction.

For those looking for playground alternatives while the Waverley Park play space is out of action, there are lots of nearby playground options:

Stephen Street Reserve

Marlborough  Reserve

Dickson Reserve
