About the permit

A carer parking permit allows a carer to park near your home while providing care or support. This may include a family member, support worker, nurse or other person who regularly helps you at home.

Permits are linked to the carer's vehicle number plate and are managed online. You do not need to display a permit sticker.

Carer parking permits are valid for 12 months.

If eligible, you can apply for a maximum of 3 carer parking permits, depending on where you live. Our online system will display the number of permits you are eligible for automatically.

The resident makes the application.

Eligibility

You (the resident) can apply for a carer parking permit if:

  • You live in a street within a zone where resident parking permits are available. How to check
  • The permit is for a carer who provides care or support at the home where you live.
  • The carer's vehicle is registered and weighs 4.5 tonnes or less.

You cannot apply if:

  • The carer's vehicle is unregistered.
  • The carer's vehicle is a truck, trailer, caravan, boat trailer or longer than 6 metres.

What you'll need

You will need:

  • Two documents showing where you (the resident) live.
  • A document showing carer’s vehicle ownership or use.
  • A document confirming the person provides care or support to the resident.

  • Current driver's licence.
  • Rates notice.

  • Current vehicle registration certificate showing the carer's name – a screenshot from ServiceNSW must show name and address (log into website and not app).
  • Company vehicle letter from the employer.
  • Rental or hire vehicle agreement.

  • Proof of Employment on letterhead from a care or support organisation (e.g. Centrelink, Mission Australia).
  • A doctor’s certificate, or Statutory Declaration signed by a JP, stating that the carer is required to provide support to the resident.

Costs

A 12-month carer parking permit costs $50.

How to apply

  1. Select Apply now.
  2. Create an online account or sign in.
  3. Fill in your details and upload your documents.
  4. Enter the carer's vehicle details.
  5. Make payment.
  6. Submit your application.

What happens next

Most applications are processed and approved straight away. Once approved:

  • The permit will be linked to the carer's vehicle number plate.
  • You can use your online account to renew permits, update vehicle details and check the status of your applications.
  • The carer does not need to display a physical permit.

Applications that require additional checks may take up to 5 business days. If we need more information to process your application, we'll contact you by phone or email.

Check if parking is available on my street

The easiest way to check is to look at the street signs – your carer is allowed to park in areas that allow resident parking.

The Area number on the sign will also need to match the Area number on your permit.

You can also enter your address in the online map to see if resident parking is available on your street. If it is, then your carer can use this permit to park there.

Reminder notices

You'll receive a reminder by email and SMS before your permit expires, so you can renew it ahead of time if needed.

Refunds

Parking permit fees are non-refundable but if there has been an administration error during the application process contact Council with the details.

Can the carer permit be transferred?

You can transfer your permit to a different carer vehicle through your online account.
