Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO)

Waverley's FOGO trial
Council is trialling a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service across four suburbs in Waverley. Trial households are putting food scraps in the green bin combined with garden organics. This bin is now collected weekly, and its contents are turned into compost.
By 2030, all councils across New South Wales must provide a FOGO service, as outlined in the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041. The feedback received during this trial will help Council deliver a FOGO service for all Waverley residents in 2027.
Waverley’s FOGO trial started in October 2024 and was expanded in August 2025.
Who is in the trial?
Around 3,000 households in Bondi, North Bondi, Rose Bay and Bronte have been included in the trial. Please refer to the table of streets included in the trial in the Frequently Asked Questions.
If you have not received a FOGO starter pack and your street is not listed below, your household is not in the trial.
No additional households can be included in the trial service.
Useful resources
- All residents in the trial area were provided with a FOGO starter pack, which included a kitchen caddy, compostable liners and how-to guide.

Only use Council-supplied liners or liners that have the ‘seedling logo’ and the code ‘AS 4736’ printed on them. The seedling logo is a symbol that the product’s claims of biodegradability and compostability have been independently checked. Find out more here.

Store your liners in a cool, dark place, such as a kitchen cupboard. The liners are designed to break down, so exposure to excessive sunlight will accelerate this.
You can store your food scraps in any container or jar of your choice. We suggest storing them away from direct sunlight, or in the fridge or freezer if you have space, in the compostable liner.
That’s fantastic! The FOGO service is a commercial compost so can process a larger amount of garden organics and ‘harder to compost items’ such as dairy, meat, bones, bread, grains and citrus. This means you can use it alongside your home composting or chicken food. We suggest keeping these items in your fridge or freezer until collection day to avoid attracting pests.
