South Bondi / Tamarama
South Bondi is an established residential area. The South Bondi / Tamarama Precinct is bounded by Edward Street, Wellington Street, Watson Street, Birrell Street, Tamarama Beach, Fletcher Street, Dudley Street, Bondi Road and Denham Street. Please note boundary lines run through the middle of the street. South Bondi / Tamarama Precinct is part of Waverley Ward.
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, although growth was minimal until the late 1800s. The Bondi Aquarium amusement park operated in the area from 1887 till 1906, and then operated as Wonderland City until 1911. Expansion took place during the post-war years. The population has fluctuated slightly since the early 1990s. Bondi is named from an Aboriginal word meaning “sound of the waves breaking on the beach”.
Major features of the area include Tamarama Park, Marks Park and Tamarama Beach. Tamarama is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal name for the area, “Gamma Gamma”. It was originally known as Dixon Bay.
