Mill Hill / Bondi Junction
Bondi Junction is an established residential and commercial area. The Bondi Junction Precinct is bounded by Oxford Street, Council Street, Birrell Street, York Road and Syd Einfeld Drive. Please note boundary lines run through the middle of the street. Bondi Junction Precinct is part of Lawson Ward.
Bondi Junction was named for the tramway junction of Bondi, which was named from an Aboriginal word meaning “sound of the waves breaking on the beach”. It was previously known as Tea Gardens.
Settlement of the area dates from 1832 when the first land grant was made. Residential and commercial growth took place from the 1880s into the early 1900s, aided by land subdivision and the area becoming a tramway junction. Substantial development took place from the late 1970s, spurred by the opening of the eastern suburbs railway terminal in 1979. Commercial, office and high density residential developments were constructed, making Bondi Junction an even larger and more important commercial area. The population has increased since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
Major features of the area include the Bondi Junction Business District, Eastgate Shopping Centre, Westfield Bondi Junction (shopping centre), Waverley Park, Waverley Oval, Council Chambers, Clementson Park and Waverley Community Garden.
