Red lid garbage bin

Council offers a weekly collection of the residential Red Lid Garbage bin. Find your collection day here.

What goes in the red lid bin?

Contents of the red lid bin are destined for landfill. The following items can be placed into your red lid bin:

  • plastic bags
  • food scraps
  • nappies and sanitary products
  • broken crockery

What cannot go in the red lid bin?

Some items can pose a serious risk to our collection crews, MRF workers, or the environment. Do not place the following into kerbside red lid bins:

  • Recyclable containers or paper (sort these into yellow or blue lid recycling bins)
  • Construction and demolition waste
  • Commercial and business waste
  • Gas bottle
  • Materials that are too heavy
  • Dust (unbagged dust from vacuums, sawing, etc.)
  • Dirt, rocks, or garden waste
  • Hazardous waste such as asbestos
  • Chemicals, solvents, paints and oils
  • Sharps
  • Household and car batteries
  • Electronic waste

Waste that cannot go into red bins should be disposed of responsibly through a Chemical Cleanout event, a problem waste drop off event, at a Community Recycling Centre, a Problem Waste Station or through a reputable private contractor.

Houses and terraces are entitled to have one 140 L general waste bin. The number of red 240L general waste recycling bins allocated to apartment buildings (3 or more dwellings) is calculated using the waste generation rates in Council’s Developmental Control Plan 2012 which can be viewed here.
