Culture Waves

What Culture Waves is all about
If you’re 14–18 and live or study in Waverley, Culture Waves gives you the chance to connect, learn new skills and make a difference in your community.
There are two programs available:
- an afterschool program, where participation can count towards a Skills or Voluntary Service Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; and
- a cross-city program, which is delivered across two school days.
Annual afterschool program
The Culture Waves afterschool program runs from March to July each year.
You’ll join group workshops, mentoring sessions and help plan a youth-led community event.
What to expect
- An information session for young people and parents/guardians in February
- Weekly group workshops during school terms
- Four mentoring sessions scheduled flexibly with mentors
- A youth-led community event in June
- A final group get-together after the July school holidays
When you finish
At the end of the program, you will receive a certificate of recognition and a program pin.
Note: Participants must attend at least 50% of workshops.
How to apply
Applications for the 2026 Culture Waves Afterschool Program are open now. Submit your application online using the Culture Waves Application form.
2026 Cross-City Program
The Culture Waves Cross-City Program is a two-day intercultural experience delivered in partnership with Liverpool City Council.
It brings together 30 students from Waverley and 30 from Liverpool to connect, collaborate and learn about diversity and inclusion.
Sessions take place on two separate school days – one in Liverpool and one at Bondi Beach – covering similar topics to the Culture Waves afterschool program.
How to apply
Applications are accepted through participating high schools. Contact us for more information.
Become a mentor
Waverley Council is looking for mentors to support the Culture Waves program.
As a mentor, you’ll help guide young people as they explore their individual strengths and goals.
It’s a great way to share your experience, build your community-engagement skills and make a real difference in the lives of local young people.
How to apply
Find out more and apply by completing the Culture Waves Mentor Application Form.
