Taking action against antisemitism
Waverley is home to one of Australia’s largest Jewish communities, with more than 11,000 residents (16% of our population) identifying as Jewish.
Sadly, antisemitism is on the rise across Australia. Waverley Council is taking a clear stand: we are committed to ensuring Jewish residents feel respected, valued and safe, and to fostering inclusion for everyone in our community.
What our council is doing
Local governments play a vital role in building safe, cohesive communities.
In addition to adopting our own strategy, Waverley’s Mayor Will Nemesh is launching a Model Strategy that councils across Australia can use to tailor their own strategies.
This initiative demonstrates our leadership nationally while supporting the local community. Read Media Release.
Strategy to combat antisemitism
Waverley Council has adopted Australia’s first local government Strategy to combat antisemitism. This strategy sets out practical actions to address antisemitism and reinforces our commitment to building a safe, inclusive and cohesive community.
Supporting councils Australia-wide
To support councils across Australia, Waverley has developed the Model Antisemitism Strategy for Local Councils – a flexible, easy-to-use resource with practical actions that councils can take, including:
- Leadership, planning and advocacy: Adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism, passing Council motions, providing grants, and supporting Jewish organisations.
- Public education and awareness: Delivering and supporting public programs that raise awareness of antisemitism and creating educational resources for the community.
- Intercultural and interfaith understanding: Running youth programs that address racism and antisemitism and installing commemorative plaques to acknowledge historic events.
- Community Engagement: Hosting events, public art, community dialogue and upstander and ally training.
- Monitoring and tracking: Supporting the reporting of antisemitic incidents through established channels.
This is the first resource of its kind in Australia. It empowers councils to take meaningful, visible action against antisemitism.
