Asbestos Awareness Month

November is Asbestos Awareness Month, which aims to educate Australians about the dangers of asbestos in and around homes and the best ways to identify and safely dispose of it.

About asbestos

Asbestos is found in a range of building materials. Although it was gradually phased out in the 1980s, it is still estimated to be in one and three homes and buildings and can be unsafe.

Some of the common materials include:

  • carpets, linoleum and vinyl floor tiles
  • wall and floor tiles
  • in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceiling, eaves and garages
  • around hot water pipes
  • in fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets, dog kennels, chook yards and backyard sheds.
Exposure to asbestos fibres can be harmful to your health. Please take precaution and be careful, particularly if you are doing a DIY home renovation or home maintenance.

Asbestos Policy

Council recently adopted a new Asbestos Policy, which explains our role in managing asbestos, the DA process for buildings containing asbestos, and provides other general information for those renovating their homes.

  • Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world.
  • Many people wrongly believe that only fibro homes contain asbestos. Asbestos products can most likely be found in any Australian home built or renovated before 1987.
