Asbestos
Asbestos may be contained in some building products and materials. Generally, these do not pose a risk if they are in good condition and aren't weathered, broken or have exposed fibres.
Waverley Council recommends the use of a licensed asbestos removal contractor for the removal of all asbestos-based building materials, which must be disposed of as soon as possible at a licensed waste facility to minimise any health risk.
Asbestos licensing
Bonded asbestos licence
A bonded asbestos licence is required to remove, repair or disturb more than 10 square meters of bonded asbestos material such as fibro, corrugated cement sheeting and asbestos cement pipes. Licences cost $100 (GST free) and are valid for up to two years.
Friable asbestos licences
A friable asbestos licence is required to remove, repair or disturb any amount of friable asbestos, such as sprayed limpet, asbestos cloth, millboard and pipe lagging. It also allows the removal of bonded asbestos. Licences cost $2,000 (GST free) and are valid for up to two years.
For information about asbestos licences, please visit the WorkCover Authority of NSW website.
