Council achieves share bike shakeup

Waverley Council’s first-of-its-kind agreement with share bike operators in NSW has become even more comprehensive with the third major provider, Ario, signing this week. The other operators, Lime and Hello Ride, have also signed. This means all share bikes in Waverley are covered by a comprehensive agreement outlining how share bikes are to be operated and managed within the LGA

The historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) starts on 30 June with a 6 month trial period.

Waverley Mayor Cr Will Nemesh said that the agreement with share bike operators had the framework and resourcing to finally address the issue of unsafe usage including parking of share bikes.

“I have delivered a framework in consultation with share bike operators to ensure community safety and community amenity comes first’,” he said.

Recently Mayor Will Nemesh welcomed representatives from share bike providers Lime and Hello Ride in Bondi Junction to inspect the first of approximately 60 designated share bike parking zones. It was part of his drive to bring better organisation to the use of share bikes in Waverley.

Under the MoU, the maximum speed at which e-bikes can operate under electric power will be set at 25 km/h, in line with state legislation. However, this may be restricted in certain locations within the Waverley LGA.

The providers have agreed to implement geofencing technology to define no-go zones where bikes cannot be operated or parked, including environmentally sensitive areas and pedestrian malls.
