Have Your Say about the future of Waverley Park
31 March 2023 | Council News
31 March 2023
Waverley Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on our draft Plan of Management (PoM) and Masterplan for Waverley Park to help guide a sustainable approach to managing and maintaining this valued community asset.
We are in the final stage community consultation on the PoM with the draft plan on exhibition until 1 May 2023 following endorsement by Crown Lands and Council.
To provide your feedback, visit: haveyoursay.waverley.nsw.gov.au/waverley-park-plan-of-management
Waverley Park is one of the east’s largest recreational public green spaces and the PoM will help map the future of the park for the next decade. To suit the needs of the community, the draft PoM is guided by six key directions:
- Design and setting
- Getting to and around the park
- Playing and relaxing
- Enhancing the environment
- Community, culture and heritage
- Management and maintenance
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the feedback received will help the Council make sure we have captured the community’s ideas for future projects in the park and how the space should be managed.
"Waverley Park provides respite from city living and opportunities for the community to connect and live healthy and active lifestyles,” Mayor Masselos said.
“It epitomises our community values for open and recreational space, access to nature and greenery, dog walking, areas for children to play, sporting facilities, and a place to relax with family, friends and neighbours.
“Our Waverley Park draft Plan of Management (PoM) is guided by our vision for our Open Spaces and Recreation Strategy 2021-2031 which aims to improve the lives of existing and future Waverley communities and visitors, by delivering infrastructure that supports health and well-being outcomes and encompasses biodiversity values.
“Over the past decade, we have undertaken several significant capital works projects in the park and with more upgrades planned over the next few years, it’s time to review our PoM so that it reflects current and future needs.”
Feedback will be considered before the PoM is finalised and presented to Council and Crown Lands for adoption.
Council is currently upgrading the park in three key ways:
- Play space expansion and upgrade
- Fitness station relocation and upgrade
- Pathway lighting replacement
This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government, through the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program, in association with Waverley Council.
The NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program is a once in a generation investment in high quality public open space. Together with the NSW Government, Waverley Council is delivering infrastructure for communities to love the place they live.
The project was informed by community feedback collected across two rounds of consultation and achieves Waverley's vision to upgrade the park to a district level play space catering to all visitors as identified in Waverley Council’s Play Space Strategy, Inclusive Play Space Study and the Waverley Park Plan of Management.
“Access and inclusion is at the heart of the design of the new play space and fitness station and diverse age groups and abilities were taken into account so everyone can enjoy the new facilities,” Mayor Masselos said.
