Language aides

A Language Aide service is a practical way of providing a culturally and linguistically appropriate service for clients from a non English speaking background. Communication between Council officers and people who use a community language are assisted by language aides with the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Cantonese
  • Greek
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish

Where Language Aides are not available Council uses the telephone interpreters (TIS). Council developed the Language Aides guidelines which were updated in 2004 to clarify the roles, limitations and expectations regarding the Language Aide Service.

Language Aides can be requested from any customer service desk at the main Council building, the Library, Mill Hill Centre, Seniors Centre or Early Education Centres.
