A message from the Mayor about COVID-19

17 June 2021

I would like to congratulate the Waverley community for how it has responded to the news that a man in his 60s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs and a close household contact have tested positive for COVID-19.

A woman in her 70s who dined at a café visited by the man has also since tested positive and new venues of concern have been added to NSW Health’s venue list which includes Bondi Junction venues Event Cinemas, Myer and David Jones.

The Bondi Beach drive-through testing clinic has seen a swell in the number of people getting testing today and the wonderful staff at St Vincent's Hospital are managing to test people fairly quickly.

The Bondi Beach testing clinic is open from 7.30am to 10pm every day until further notice. Children ages 5 and under should attend the testing facility at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick. Click here for the complete list of testing sites.

Please, if you have visited a venue of concern, experience any symptoms, or have any concerns, immediately get tested and remain in isolation until you have received a negative result. Remember to always maintain hand hygiene and social distance where possible. And please get vaccinated as soon as you are able.

I also echo the Health Minister’s advice today to residents of Sydney’s eastern suburbs to wear a mask when traveling on public transport.

I encourage the community to continue to support our wonderful local businesses by remembering to check-in using the QR codes which is vital for contact tracing.

These new cases of COVID-19 are a sobering reminder that we are still in a pandemic. We must remain vigilant and work together to keep the community safe and contain the spread of this deadly virus which has claimed the lives of 3.8 million worldwide.

Paula Masselos, Mayor of Waverley
