Waverley Council urges the community to stay safe this weekend
06 April 2024
Waverley Council is urging residents and visitors to heed warnings from emergency services to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel after significant rainfall last night caused widespread damage along the NSW east coast.
In the Waverley LGA:
- Parts of the coastal walk between Bondi Beach and Marks Park, Tamarama are closed after a rock slip. Barricades and temporary fencing have been installed. Please do not enter these areas under any circumstances
- Crews are responding to fallen trees in several locations.
An image taken overnight by Council officers of the rock slip below Marks Park. This area of the coastal walk has been closed to the public.
Council officers are continuing to inspect other parks and reserves and encourage people to delay outdoor activity until conditions improve.
A hazardous surf warning also remains in place today for the Sydney, Illawarra, Hunter, Batemans and Eden coasts.
Bronte and Tamarama beaches are closed this morning for swimming and there is only one set of flags up at Bondi Beach. Bronte ocean pool is also closed due to dangerous surf conditions. Waverley Council lifeguards are urging visitors to avoid our beaches today and observe all safety signage and lifeguard announcements.
The NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
- People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
- Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
- Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
- Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a life jacket.
- Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
