Referendum BBQ to be held at Bondi Pavilion this Sunday
21 September 2023
21 September 2023
This Sunday from 2pm at Bondi Pavilion, Waverley Council is holding an information session and BBQ ahead of this year’s referendum on the Voice to Parliament.
“Waverley Council is proud to support the ‘Yes’ vote in this referendum. Last year we unanimously voted to support the Uluru Statement From the Heart which calls for two substantive changes: the Voice to Parliament and a Makarrata Commission to supervise agreement making and truth-telling about our First Nations history,” said Mayor Paula Masselos.
The Mayor continued on to say, “it’s really important to me that we support the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to determine their own future and live according to their own values and culture. We are working towards a Waverley where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are honoured for their survival and resilience.”
“I look forward to supporting a respectful and positive campaign so we can make progress on this hugely important and historic issue. The BBQ will be an opportunity to hear from guest speakers, and our special guests include Karen Mundine, CEO of Reconciliation Australia and Michael Ingrey, CEO of Inner Sydney Empowered Communities.”
“Come on down and enjoy a fun afternoon with food and DJs Drac Hammond (Delta Riggs) and Dan Mac (Art VS Science), and have your questions about the referendum answered. While we know that many people in our community already support the Yes vote, there are still many undecided voters. The session will be a chance for those people, and anyone who just wants to know more, to hear information about what the Voice’s role would be.”
“The BBQ will take place in the Garu (southern) courtyard of our fabulous Bondi Pavilion from about 2-5pm, with speeches at 3pm. It’s fantastic to be able to hold community events like this in restored Pavilion, which Waverley Council are proud to have re-opened last year.”
We ask that people please RSVP for catering purposes.
How you vote is up to you, but we encourage you to get the facts. So to find out more, visit voice.gov.au or refer to the Australian Electoral Commission’s official Yes/No referendum pamphlet being distributed to all households.
Voting is compulsory for all adults, so visit the AEC website to ensure your enrolment detail are up to date. If you are scheduled to attend your citizenship ceremony on or before Saturday 14 October 2023, then you can complete the provisional enrolment form to enrol as a new citizen ahead of the referendum. Your completed form must be received by 8pm local time on the close of roll for the 2023 referendum.
