Extraordinary Council Meeting, 26 October 2023

26 October 2023

Tonight, Thursday 26 October, Waverley Council convened an Extraordinary Council Meeting.

At that meeting, two Notices of Motion were heard, including amending the term of office of the Deputy Mayor.

Waverley Council resolved to amend the term of office of the Deputy Mayor from up to and including 13 September 2024 to up to and including 26 October 2023. This means that the position of Deputy Mayor is now vacant.

The role of Council is to represent our local community and we have a duty of care to reflect the aspirations of our local community.

Our focus remains on moving forward as a community and serving our community's needs.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the following about the outcome of tonight’s meeting:

“As the elected leader of Waverley, my unwavering focus is on ensuring the safety, resilience and harmony of our local community, which is home to people from around the world,” Mayor Masselos said.

“I am proud to represent a community that is committed to helping each other in times of need and showing compassion for our fellow citizens.

“Waverley is home to a diverse community, and we stand united as a community to support each other during this difficult time.

“As elected local government officials, our job is to serve the needs of our local community and ensure that our community feels safe and supported. This is the role of local government in Australia.

"As of tomorrow, I call on our community to look forward and come together in unity to support each other during this time of heartbreak for many.

“I would like to thank Councillor Fabiano for the contributions he has made to Waverley during his time as Deputy Mayor. I also acknowledge the important role Councillor Fabiano and Wy Kanak have played as voting members on our various committees."

Waverley Council General Manager, Emily Scott, said the Council will continue to support our community including those impacted by the devastating events unfolding overseas.

“Our community is rich in diversity with almost 40 percent of residents born overseas,” Ms Scott said.

“We value this diversity, and we support a caring and inclusive community where people of all nationalities are able to celebrate their culture and heritage proudly."
