- Waverley Youth Art Prize
Waverley Youth Art Prize
12 May 2019
12 May 2019
Pop culture inspires this year’s Waverley Youth Art Prize
Entries close Friday 24 May for the Waverley Youth Art Prize for artists ages nine to 18.
The Prize is awarded by Waverley Council and gives young people the chance to experience the joy of being an exhibiting artist at Waverley Library and seeing an audience appreciate their work and talents.
Winners will share in more than $3,000 in cash and prizes and the winner of the senior category (ages 16 to 18) will receive a voucher to attend the National Art Schools Summer School Programme in a discipline of their choosing.
Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, said he looks forward to seeing how young people interpret this year’s theme, ‘pop culture’.
“As a father of young kids, I’m keen to see how our artists go about presenting thoughts, ideas, attitudes and images that represent pop culture,” Mayor Wakefield said.
“Works can be drawings, paintings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video/film or new media, so I’m expecting some very interesting and thought-provoking works.”
Emanuel School student, Adena Sheps, 17, won the Waverley Youth Art Prize in 2018 and said that art gives her the creative freedom to express herself in a way that “transcends language and time”.
The Prize is judged in three age categories:
- 9 to 12 years
- 13 to 15 years
- 16 to 18 years
Entries must be received via this online portal before 6pm on Friday 24 May, and be delivered to the library between 9.30am to 6pm on this date.
