Waverley Council supports international Human Rights Day
10 December 2019
10 December 2019
Waverley Council is joining the millions of people around the world observing international Human Rights Day today.
Human Rights Day marks the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Waverley Council recognises this important day in our calendar.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos says this year’s theme of Youth Standing Up for Human Rights is an reminder for us to focus on our youth taking a stance for our future.
“We are so fortunate to be a part of a community that cares so very deeply about reconciliation and human rights,” Mayor Masselos said.
“Human Rights Day is about respect. Respect for people everywhere. For those who came before us and those who will follow us.”
Yesterday, Waverley Council launched its second Reconciliation Action Plan- a document that will guide the Council’s commitment to national reconciliation efforts by proposing strategies and actions to work towards achieving as an organisation and with the community.
“Our Statement of Commitment to Reconciliation in our RAP also speaks to the purpose of Human Rights Day as it’s our way of recognising and respecting the original custodians of our land,” Mayor Masselos said.
“Around 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live in Waverley. We are also home to people from across the world, and more than 30 different languages are spoken in our households and communities working together.
“I urge the Waverley community to be the change. Let’s aim to close the gap, celebrate reconciliation and stand up for the rights of people everywhere.” she said.
