Sculpture by the Sea 2019

As the newly elected Mayor of Waverley, I would like to welcome artists and visitors to Sculpture by the Sea 2019.

Waverley Council and the residents of Waverley have proudly supported this world-famous event for the past 23 years.

I am delighted to continue to offer our iconic coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama Beach and our community headland park, Marks Park, as the setting for this event.

I have a long history within the arts sector and a great respect for the endeavours of the Sculpture by the Sea artists and look forward to what they have in store for the community this year.

Waverley Council supports the event to the tune of around $150,000 each year. This is mainly for work done in kind, including covering the cost of turf remediation, venue usage and traffic control around Marks Park. This $150,000 also includes $20,000 in grants, including $5000 in the form of a Small Grant for ‘Tactile Tours’.

In July, Council voted unanimously to approve a license for the event for 2019, as well as an additional five plus five-year license should Sculpture wish to remain in Bondi through to 2030. On 11 October, Sculpture by the Sea signed the license agreement for one year (2019). If Sculpture would like to remain in Waverley, a new license agreement will need to be negotiated and signed for next year’s event. Council recognises though that the future location of Sculpture by the Sea is a decision for the organisers.

With regards to Council’s accessible pathway at Marks Park, we have a responsibility to our different stakeholders and an obligation to our residents to provide facilities and infrastructure. Our new pathway, which I officially opened on 12 October, provides step-free continuous access around the entire perimeter of Marks Park. For some park users, the new pathway will provide independent access to Sculpture by the Sea at Marks Park for the very first time. Marks Park is first and foremost a park for the Waverley community that also happens to make a great location for Sculpture by the Sea.
