Level 1 water restrictions in place from 1 June 2019

Level 1 water restrictions will be in place from Saturday, 1 June 2019 for all residents and businesses in the Sydney region.

The restrictions limit how and when we we use drinking water outdoors and help reduce consumption when there isn’t adequate rainfall.

Restrictions are mandated by the state government and coordinated and managed by Sydney Water. As such, the restrictions will by lifted by the state government when dam levels increase to appropriate levels. Fines apply for failing to observe the restrictions.

Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, said the restrictions are necessary to help stem a rapid decline in the city’s reservoirs amid the state’s ongoing drought.

“The drought is having a devastating impact on regional NSW, and limiting our outdoor water usage is one way Sydneysiders can help conserve our most precious resource,” Mayor Wakefield said.

“We encourage everyone to familarise themselves with the do’s and don’t of the restrictions, and work together to save water one drop at a time.”

There are many activities you can do to further decrease water use at home, work and school, ranging from not leaving the tap running through to installing rainwater tanks and dual-flush toilets. How Waverley Council saves water:

  • Our parks are watered using recycled water from various Council owned and operated water recycling infrastructure. This helps us save over 80 million litres of drinking water per year. Click here to learn more about this infrastructure.
  • We have a water leak detection system allows us to save water by detecting leaks in our buildings and promptly acting on them.
  • We are supporting Sydney Water by communicating about water restrictions and providing residents with links to websites with tips on how to reduce water use outside and inside their homes.

Types of water excluded from the restrictions:

  • Recycled water (supplied in some parts of Sydney through purple pipes)
  • Greywater (water from sinks, showers, washing machines etc)
  • Rainwater (as long as the tank/dam isn't topped up from, or switched to, the drinking water supply)
  • Bore water
  • River water (you need to have a licence)

Uses of water excluded from the restrictions:

  • Water parks
  • Water used for firefighting, testing and related activities
  • Water used for dust suppression and concrete mixing
  • Automatic (drive through) car washes
