MEDIA RELEASE

Waverley Council has elected a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor at a meeting held last night at Waverley Council Chambers.

Mayor John Wakefield was elected for a two year term to lead Waverley Council. This is the second Mayoral term for Councillor Wakefield who served in the position in 2011/2012. Councillor Dominic Wy Kanak was elected as Deputy Mayor for a term of 12 months.

Mayor Wakefield said he was looking forward to the future in a speech to Councillors and the public last night.

“I am honoured to serve this community and take on the role as Mayor again.

“This new Council will ensure inclusive decision making with representation across the appointed Councillor Committees. I value fairness and I believe proper procedure is one of the most important aspects of my role as Mayor.

“Our key priorities for this term of Council include the drafting of a new plan for Bondi Pavilion and seeing it through to its completion, with the establishment of a community advisory group; the establishment of a new Strategic Planning and Development Committee; a review of parking across the municipality; and optimising transport options along Bondi Road.”

“Dumped rubbish is also a major priority. There has to be a better way to get dumped rubbish off the streets. As Mayor I will work with Councillors and staff to find the best solution.”

The Mayor spoke highly of the calibre of this term of Council and the range of expertise and skill they bring.

“I am looking forward to working with the community and Councillors to deliver new directions and make Waverley a better place,” Mayor Wakefield said.

The Mayor thanked the Waverley community for their support.

The vote for Mayor and Deputy Mayor was 7 votes to 5.
