Update on Oxford Street Mall Markets

23 February 2018

Acting General Manager, Peter Monks said, "We are exploring all options to keep the market going with minimal impact on stallholders and the community."

"Following the Council meeting, officers contacted the current operator who has agreed to manage the markets for a further two week period up to 16 March. This will provide us additional time to investigate options and provide the best chance of continuing the market operation for stallholders."

Council officers are investigating the feasibility of Council assuming responsibility for market operations on an interim basis. Any such arrangement would be in place only until such time as officers are able to appoint a new operator through a tender process.

"While all options will be investigated and every effort given to implementing an interim arrangement within the available timeframe, it is important to note that it may not be legally or administratively possible to achieve this," Mr Monks said.

There will be a report to Council’s Operations and Community Services Committee on 6 March outlining the long-term options for daytime markets in Oxford Street Mall, as a matter of urgency.
