The meter is running! Deadline extended to have your say on parking fees
13 April 2018
MEDIA RELEASE
Waverley Council is reviewing parking fees to make things fairer for both business and residents
and the deadline to have your say has been extended a week to 23 April 2018.
There are six major changes:
- A free beach parking permit for residents
- One free parking permit for each residential address
- Free parking in Bondi Junction after 6pm
- Free parking at Bondi Beach after 7pm
- 15 minutes free parking in metered zones 15 minutes free “drop in” zones in local shopping strips.
Mayor John Wakefield said the changes are a move away from revenue-raising, towards flexibility
and consistency for residents and business.
“Some of these changes will make a small difference to Council’s income, but will mean a much
fairer approach to parking for residents,” Mayor Wakefield said.
“Residents who live in a Residential Parking Scheme area, for example, in parts of Bondi Beach,
Bondi Junction and Bronte, must pay for a parking permit whereas other residents do not.
“People have had concerns about the fairness of parking in Waverley for many years,” he said.
Mayor Wakefield said parking permits such as residential and beach parking permits account for
only 5.65% of total parking revenue. While revenue from parking tickets and infringements was
more signi ficant, Mr Wakefield said switching off meters in local shopping strips would reinvigorate
business.
“And if approved, the changes will reflect what happens in other parts of Sydney,” he said.
“It’s the right of all residents to have a direct say on this and it has never been given to them on this
scale before,” Mr Wakefield said
