Say “watt?” Lighting Pilot Project Launched with The Heart of Bondi switched
15 December 2017
MEDIA RELEASE
Waverley Council is thrilled to switch on a nine metre interactive installation called The Heart of Bondi in Oxford Street Mall next Monday, 18 December at 7.30pm.
Waverley’s Draft Creative Lighting Strategy is currently on public exhibition. This temporary installation will give the community a taste of how creative lighting can be used in the area.
The strategy has over 50 creative lighting ideas for Bondi Junction, Bondi Beach and the Coastal Walk.
The Heart of Bondi was designed and created by Amigo and Amigo and is inspired by sea coral and Waverley’s unique coastal views.
Even more special than its aesthetics, visitors will be able to connect with the sculpture as it is also an interactive installation which illuminates your heart beat.
When visitors touch a sensor their heart beat sequence will register and eight different wave-like patterns in various hues will be evident in the installation.
Mayor of Waverley John Wakefield said Council believes public art enlivens our streets, parks and public places.
“Art reflects the soul of our community and forms an essential part of Waverley’s identity. Thank you to artists Simone Chua and Renzo Larriviere for this exceptional work.
“Not only is it creative, it is made from approximately 800 metres of sustainable recycled rope and 1246 LED lights.
“This project would not have been possible without the generous tourism grant from the Department of Industry. We received a $160,000 matched grant as part of the Tourism Demand – Driver Infrastructure Program.
“These funds contributed to three projects including this artwork, the Hello Bondi app and free public Wi-Fi for our community,” he said.
The community is encouraged to have your say on what ideas in the Strategy they would like to see prioritised in the future.
