MEDIA RELEASE

Waverley Council is calling for entries into this year’s Youth Art Prize with the theme Heroes and Heroines – the everyday and the extraordinary.

The prize encourages creativity in young artists from Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and is open to 9-18 year-olds in three age categories.

Entries can be in any medium, from the traditional– drawing, painting and sculpture, but electronic artworks are also strongly encouraged.

Now in its 32nd year, the Youth Art Prize is unique because all entrants have their work displayed.

“Every entrant experiences the joy of being an exhibiting artist and the delight of an audience appreciating their work.”Mayor Sally Betts said.

“We have seen so many artists start their creative career from entering the Waverley Youth Art Prize.

“It is just another example of Waverley’s dedication to supporting emerging artist as part of the Waverley Cultural Program.”

There is more than $3,000 in prizes, and the winner of the senior category will receive a voucher for a workshop at the National Art School.

The judges for this year’s event are Anna John and Philjames. Both are award winning grant recipients who have exhibited their works internationally.

Mayor Betts said we are eagerly awaiting their adjudication and wisdom through the judging process.

“It is great to see these high calibre artists working with our young artists. If you’re a student, get started making your masterpiece!”

Entries must be delivered to Waverley Library on Thursday 1 June between 8am – 8pm. This is the only time for delivery this year.

The winners will be announced on Thursday 8 June and all entered works will be displayed in the Waverley Library Gallery between 9-21 June. For more information visit www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/youthartprize
