Festival of the Winds is turning 40!

Prepare to the celebrate the 40th anniversary of Festival of the Winds- Australia’s largest kite flying festival- in high-flying action as it returns to iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday, 9 September, from 11am to 4pm.

Waverley Council and the Australian Kite Flyers Society proudly host the free event which was founded in 1978 in Bondi by a group of Sydney wind energy champions with a passion for kite flying and making.

The event attracts both professional and novice kite flyers and makers demonstrating their skills and unique hand-made creations.

The 40th anniversary includes a special program including entertainment, food stalls, kite making workshops, gallery exhibitions, workshops for adults and kids, and other activities that runs alongside the professional kite flying displays on the beach.

Waverley Mayor, Cr John Wakefield, said generations of families have been a part of the evolution of Festival of the Winds.

“From its humble beginnings 40 years ago, Bondi’s very own Festival of the Winds is now one of the most popular cultural events in Sydney,” Mayor Wakefield said.

“It attracts more than 40,000 people and is recognised around the world.

“So many people have memories growing up of Festival of the Winds, and look forward to taking their children and creating new memories.”
