Waverley Council has launched free Wi-Fi for the public in Bondi Junction thanks to a generous grant by the State Government.

The $160,000 Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure grant from the Department of Industry, will see state-of-the-art Wi-Fi access points on Spring Street and Oxford Street Mall, Bondi Junction.

The successful roll-out results from a trial conducted at a number of business and tourist hubs in the area.

Mayor of Waverley, John Wakefield says Waverley Council understands the growing demand and importance of technology for both our residents and visitors.

“We first launched free Wi-Fi at Bondi Beach in 2012. This significant achievement meant we were the first Australian beach to offer a free Wi-Fi service. Now we have over 217,000 registered Wi-Fi users since an upgrade in January 2016.

“Since then we have installed free public Wi-Fi Waverley Park, Tamarama and Bronte Beaches, and of course we have free public Wi-Fi at Waverley Library too.”

The new public Wi-Fi service will have 70 Wi-Fi access points across the Waverley municipality.

“We are very grateful to receive a grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet. At Waverley we aim to keep up with the times and we understand technology is changing the way people work and communicate.

“Being able to connect to the internet when you are out and about is no longer just a luxury and thanks to the State Government it is now accessible to everyone.” Mayor Wakefield said.
