Friday, 6 July, 2018

The winners of the 2018 Waverley Art Prize were announced overnight at an awards ceremony held at the Waverley Woollahra Art School in Bondi.

A staggering 594 entries were received in the Prize, which is open to artists 18 years and over for painting, drawing and mixed media.

For the past 32 years, Waverley Council has recognised, nurtured and awarded the artistic community by way of the Waverley Art Prize.

Esteemed judges Adam Simms, Curatorial Director, Liverpool Street Gallery and abstract non-figurative painter, Marisa Purcell, had the unenviable task of whittling down this year’s entries to just 50 finalists.

The winners shared in a prize pool worth almost $12,000.

Waverley Mayor, Cr John Wakefield, presented the prizes alongside Adam Simms.

“We have many talented artists who live and work in our community and artistic expression is a very important part of the fabric that makes us who we are,” Mayor Wakefield said.

“Helping emerging artists is one of the most important legacies of this prize, and we are proud of all the artists that have entered over the years.”

The Waverley Art Prize Exhibition is open daily from 10am to 5pm at the Waverley Woollahra Art School until Sunday, 15 July.
