Entries open 2 April 2024 for the national Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award
26 March 2024 | Media Release
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Waverley Council is proud to announce that nominations for the $40,000 Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award open Tuesday 2 April, 2024.
The Nib Award is Waverley Council’s annual celebration of the best Australian research-based literature and remains the only award of its calibre in Australia to be presented nationally by a local government.
Prizes categories include the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award ($40,000), the Nib People’s Choice Prize ($4,000) and the Alex Buzo Shortlist Prize (6 x $1,500). Entries are judged on high literary merit, quality research, readability and value to the community.
Previous winners include Tim Low, Helen Garner, Christopher Koch, Clare Wright, Delia Falconer and Gideon Haigh. University of New South Wales professor Alison Bashford won the $40,000 prize last year for her book An Intimate History of Evolution: The Story of the Huxley Family (Allen Lane).
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the Nib Award is one of Australia’s most prestigious and respected literary awards for emerging and established authors.
“The Nib Award is a true award of the people, having been initiated by the Waverley community and supported by our Council for 23 years,” Mayor Masselos said.
“We are proud to present this wonderful award and continue this marvellous tradition of supporting quality Australian literature anchored in excellent research.
“Although the Nib is a national award, it maintains strong ties to the local community through the support of Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran and Community Partner Gertrude Gertrude & Alice Bookstore Café Bondi.”
Authors and their publishers are encouraged to nominate literary works, first published between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024. The Nib Award is open to all genres.
Nominations close Monday 17 June 2024. Entry guidelines and details will be available at waverley.nsw.gov.au/nib from Tuesday 2 April.
