Have Your Say about the new and improved Waverley Park Play Space

Waverley Council is inviting the community to provide feedback about our concept design for the Waverley Park Play Space.

The concept design reflects the community's feedback and has activities for children of all ages and abilities including:

  • A New rocketship and launch control play tower;
  • Active play areas with swings, spinners and see-saws;
  • A toddler play area;
  • Sensory play areas with a small water play space and musical equipment;
  • Nature, adventure, wild play areas under the existing trees with rope climbing obstacles balance beams and natural elements aimed at developing older children's skills; and
  • Two embankment slides, one accessible slide and one to replace the old slide.

Access and inclusion will be at the heart of the design, with inclusive features throughout including:

  • Accessible and inclusive play options and experiences to cater for a range of users
  • An accessible picnic area with tables, BBQ and bubbler
  • And an accessible intergenerational fitness area (aimed at seniors health and wellbeing).

The concept design is open for consultation from 5 August to 4 September 2022 at haveyoursay.waverley.nsw.gov.au and the feedback provided by the community will help inform the final design.

Waverley Council received a $1.7million grant from the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program to fund Waverley Park upgrades including the play space and fitness station. The play space upgrade restores the historical footprint of the original playground and enhances the existing open space for our all to enjoy.

Waverley Council’s adopted Play Space Strategy defines the Waverley Park Play Space as a district level playground. A district play space generally caters to residents from the general district , within a 1km (15-20min) walk of the park and have other facilities, such as toilets and picnic areas, to support longer visit of up to 2hrs or more.

District play spaces are typically larger in scale to accommodate everyone's needs.  They are a destination play space with individually designed equipment with strong themes and contain a wide range of play activities which are challenging and provide a variety of play experiences catering to toddlers thru to early teens.  Typically, they include multiple play units for several age groups, a variety active play experiences like swings and spinners, nature and sensory play areas, natural or rubber softfall, picnic spaces, accessible footpaths, seating, bins and bubblers.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the Waverley Park Play Space is one of the most popular playgrounds in the area for families to enjoy the outdoors in natural surroundings and enhances the existing open space for our all to enjoy.

“The upgrade will increase the size, age range (toddlers to early teens) and expand the types of play including inclusive experiences,” Mayor Masselos said.

“We’ve designed the space to reflect feedback from the community including expanding under the trees for nature and wild play and an adventure climbing area for older kids.

“We also plan to reproduce our much-loved rocket ship which has been grounded for safety reasons for many years and is a much loved and iconic feature in Waverley Park.”
