UPDATE 4pm Thursday 21 May

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Hazardous Surf Warning for the NSW coast from tomorrow.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said that Waverley’s beaches will be closed to swimmers from tomorrow and that Bronte Pool will also be closed for the next three days.

“It’s also likely we will be closing North Bondi Children’s Pool and Wally Weekes Pool” Mayor Masselos said.

“We echo the advice from NSW Police and the Marine Area Command that people should stay out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.

“Our lifeguards will continue to be extra vigilant during the high seas and we ask the public to observe our signage at our beaches and instructions from lifeguards at all times.

“Please do not put your safety at risk or the safety of others.”

NSW Police also advised that:

  • Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
  • Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
  • Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
  • Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

Waves of between two to five metres are expected from tomorrow until Sunday.
