Solar my School wins Climate Change Action award
Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra Councils’ Solar my School program has taken out the Climate Change Action award in Local Government NSW’s annual Environmental Excellence Awards, announced yesterday in Sydney.
Solar my School was launched in 2017 by the three Councils to provide independent support and guidance to primary and secondary schools looking to power their facilities with locally produced clean energy.
Offered to all schools across the eastern suburbs, the program helps local schools navigate a path to solar success from start to finish, from initial solar feasibility and funding advice, through to tender assistance and installation, as well as education for students.
More than 90 per cent of schools in Sydney's eastern suburbs are introducing solar utilising the free program.
Solar my School 3-Council spokesperson, Anthony Weinberg, said every community has schools, and every school should have solar.
“We’re sharing this award with staff and parents from 58 local schools who are taking the lead to power their learning facilities with sunshine, and reduce their carbon footprint,” Mr Weinberg said.
The Local Government NSW (LGNSW) environment awards recognise exceptional environmental achievements in categories such as local sustainability, water management, climate change action, resource recovery, and asbestos management.
LGNSW President Linda Scott said local government has been a powerhouse for undertaking environmental projects designed to achieve real outcomes for current and future generations.
“Each year NSW councils invest around $1.7 billion in environmental management - a significant investment, dwarfed only by the enormity of the environmental issues we face,” Councillor Scott said.
