Prepare to be blown away - Festival of the Winds
01 September 2017 | Media Release
MEDIA RELEASE
World class kite flying champions, cultural dancers, bands, 13 piece Latin band - Mucho Mambo, food from around the globe, kids petting zoo, face painting, kite making workshops and much more!
Prepare to be blown away at the annual Festival of the Winds. It’s back – bigger and better than ever on Sunday 10 September at the iconic Bondi Beach from 11am-4pm.
Waverley Council and the Australian Kite Flyers Society will host the largest kite festival in Australia on Sydney’s most famous beach.
Now in its, 39th year, the free ‘wind-powered’ event attracts both professional and novice kite flyers and makers showing off their skills and amazing hand-made creations.
Not only will the sky come alive, but there will be plenty of things to do and see on the ground as well. You can make your own sky-high creation at one of the kite making workshops offered throughout the day.
There’s also food stalls from all over the world, children's activities, demonstrations, puppet shows, and a day-long entertainment program on the main stage, making Festival of the Winds one of Sydney's most loved events.
Acting General Manager, Cathy Henderson said the festival is a real crowd pleaser attracting well-regarded international kite flyers.
“It’s a fun day out for the whole family. Last year we had a staggering 40,000 people attend the event.
“Our sky comes alive with hundreds of colourful creations not only from local kite enthusiasts, but well-known international guests including husband and wife duo Eli and Sheva Shavit from Israel and Swedish born Andreas Ågren will be flying in from Bali for the special event.
While anyone can join in the fun, judges from the Australian Kite Flyers Society will be on the lookout for the best kite.
Australian Kite Flyers Society member and world record holder for flying the highest kite, Michael Richards says the day brings so much joy.
“It’s an exciting day where families come down to the beach and play with the wind, laugh and giggle and just have some old fashioned fun.”
