Today’s judgement from the High Court, granting Woollahra Council special leave to appeal, has come as no surprise to Waverley Council following an earlier decision from the Court of Appeals in late March on the Ku-ring-gai Council merger.

This outcome does not change Waverley Council’s preference to merge with Randwick and Woollahra councils for a better future for the eastern beaches councils if amalgamations do go ahead.

The Mayor of Waverley, Sally Betts said she had thought the courts would grant the leave to appeal today.

“I am not surprised the High Court made that decision, but I still believe an eastern beaches council is the best outcome for our community if we do have to merge."

“We had always said Waverley was in a great position to stand alone if we had that option, but if amalgamations do go ahead, the new council will provide improved services to our three communities,” Mayor Betts said.

A date is yet to be set for the High Court hearing.
