MEDIA RELEASE

Waverley Council has now submitted the Development Application (DA) for Stage 1 of the Bondi Pavilion Upgrade and Conservation Project.

The plan will restore the heritage of the Pavilion, whilst retaining the site as a community and cultural centre, with the aim of achieving 5 Green Star environmental rating.

Council thanks the community for their feedback, which has driven the final plan submitted. The designs ensure:

  • A new gallery/exhibition/museum space
  • Music studio facilities (for recording and rehearsing) remain at the Pavilion
  • An expanded pottery studio at the Pavilion with the addition of a new kiln and air-conditioning
  • A new amenities block, which more than doubles the women’s toilets, with a main entry from within the Pavilion.

The designs also include new landscaped courtyards, the pedestrianisation of the current Council car park on the Campbell Parade side of the Pavilion, and space for events and festivals.

As part of heritage works, the roof will be replaced and strengthened, the external façade will be painted and repaired, and the original 1929 symmetry of the beach facing façade will be restored.

Decisions relating to the first floor and the final location of the theatre are deferred until after the next Council is elected.

Stage 1 of the works will increase the amount of community space (compared to the current setup), and reduce the overall amount of commercially leased space.

Mayor of Waverley, Sally Betts says she is grateful for the community feedback.

“The current plan reflects the wants and needs of the community, but also structurally addresses the necessary upgrades required for this significant community space.

“We are pleased to be moving ahead with the project so that we can preserve and enhance this iconic building. We will endeavour to minimise disruptions to those who use the facility during the construction phase but I’m excited to see the Pavilion’s heritage restored to its former glory,” Mayor Betts said.

The DA will now be determined by the Sydney Planning Panel which is independent of Council. As part of the DA process, the submission will be on statutory exhibition for 28 days. We expect this exhibition period to begin in mid-April, and the public are invited to provide their feedback as part of this process.

Council will be holding an Information Session on 10 April, 6–7pm at Bondi Pavilion. Please go to waverley.nsw.gov.au/bondipavilionproject for more information.
