Express. Empower. Get Loud! In Waverley for Youth Week 2024
08 May 2024 | Council News
Waverley Council’s Youth Week 2024 celebrations are gearing up for a huge closing event on Sunday 19 May with the WAVES Youth Music Festival at the Dolphin Court, Bondi Park, from noon to 5pm.
The festival line-up includes local young acoustic, garage pop and DJ acts, and a Bondi Beats showcase of emerging DJs/ MCs.
It is organised by WAYS Youth & Family, in partnership with Waverley and Woollahra Councils. The festival was scheduled for 5 May but was postponed due to the forecast of wet weather.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos said the festival draws large crowds each year and showcases the area’s best emerging local artists.
“Youth Week is an opportunity for young people aged 12 – 24 to create and enjoy activities, express ideas, talents, diversity, and views in communities throughout NSW,” Mayor Masselos said.
“Waverley’s Youth Week program embodies this year’s theme of Express. Empower. Get Loud! through workshops and events focused on music making and performance.
Youth Week is one of the most popular community campaigns in Waverley.
"Our Young Womxn’s Intro to Sound Production workshop on April 20 at Bondi Pavilion Music Studios engaged young women keen to learn the fundamentals of music recording and production. Led by sound engineer Michelle Barry and recording artist/performer Jade Kenji, it provided a space for young women to gain studio skills, learn about pathways to careers in the industry and provide feedback that will help design future workshops.
“And whilst our Bondi Beach Bash on 13 April at the Bondi Pavilion High Tide Room did not go ahead as planned due to the Bondi Junction tragedy, we had five young emerging bands take the initiative and organise their own evening of live music, including implementing a promotional strategy that resulted in a record sell-out show in the days leading up to the postponed event.
“The bands are working with our council officers to reschedule the event to Saturday May 18, 5pm at the Bondi Pavilion High Tide Room. We’ll have further updates on our Facebook page, so watch this space.”
Youth Week is officially held from 11 to 21 April but is celebrated in Waverley with a month of youth-led events.
The WAVES Youth Music Festival will be held on Sunday 19 May at the Dolphin Court on the southern side of Bondi Pavilion, from noon to 5pm. To attend a Bondi Beats pop-up workshop, please register at waverley.nsw.gov.au/community/children_youth_and_family_support/young_people/youth_week. Places are filling fast.
