Bondi lifeguards urge beachgoers to be savvy on safety

Waverley Council has officially launched its ‘Stay Safe this Summer’ campaign! Featuring Waverley’s lifeguards, the campaign urges the local community and visitors to take simple steps to stay safe whilst at Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches.

Waverley Council has the longest patrol hours in Australia, between 6am and 7pm every day throughout summer. The campaign highlights the importance of swimming between the flags and provides advice on what to do should you get into trouble in the ocean, such as caught in a rip.

Last year Waverley Council’s lifeguards rescued over 1,700 people, responded to 4,700 first aid incidents, and carried out 38,000 preventative actions to ensure public safety and reduce the risk of accidents and drownings.

Bruce “Hoppo” Hopkins, Coordinator of Lifeguard Services, said:

“From my 32 years as a lifeguard, I know that simple safety advice can save lives. Drownings are on the up across Australia and we must do more to turn this tide. If you get into trouble in the water, conserve your energy, stop swimming and float. If you’re between the red and yellow flags, we have a far greater chance of spotting you so please swim and bathe in the designated area when you come to our beaches.”
