Celebrate safely this Australia Day

Waverley Council is encouraging visitors to our beaches, parks and reserves to celebrate safely this Australia Day, 26 January 2023.

There will be increased ranger and Police patrols to help manage crowds and traffic as well as on-the-spot fines for littering and drinking alcohol at beaches and parks.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said our outdoor spaces are there for all to share and that anti-social behaviour, such as what we saw on Christmas day, won’t be tolerated.

“We kindly ask that people remain respectful of our environment including our parks, community and staff so that everyone can have an enjoyable 26 January” Mayor Masselos said.

“As always, there are plenty of bins available so please do the right thing and dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully. Please help keep our outdoor spaces clean for all to enjoy.

“Alcohol is not permitted at our beaches and parks, and we’ll be making sure that this is observed for the safety of all visitors. Please do not swim if under the influence of alcohol.

“Our professional lifeguards are also asking beach goers, whether they are experienced swimmers or not, to remain vigilant in the water, and to take heed of lifeguard instructions and directions.

“This summer has presented challenges with hot weather, increased crowds, and some hazardous surf conditions. Many people want to enjoy Waverley’s Bondi, Tamarama, and Bronte beaches however, it is critical that beach goers heed safety advice, and if in doubt, check with the lifeguards who are on duty every day of the year.

“Our key message is to swim between the red and yellow flags, and if you get into trouble in the water, signal for help and Float to Survive. This means not panicking, don’t try to swim, float on your back and try to attract help.”

Waverley Council Lifeguards’ safety tips:

• Please listen to the lifeguards’ advice and follow their directions.
• Please take time to read all safety signage at our beaches, especially if you intend to enter the water.
• Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
• No flags, no swim.
• Never swim where you see the Dangerous Current sign.
• If you DO get in trouble or need assistance in the water, raise one arm to attract attention and try to Float
• If in doubt don’t go out. It’s important to know your own ability in the water.
• Don’t swim after the patrol hours and if the beach is closed do not enter the water.
• Don't swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
• Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Wear sunscreen and protective clothing to shield you from the sun.

NSW Police Force has advised Council that it is essential to make a section of Bronte Road one-way on Australia Day for vehicle and pedestrian safety, and to ensure emergency vehicles such as ambulances, can access Bronte Beach and Park if necessary.

For that reason, Bronte Road will become one-way westbound, between Nelson Avenue and Gardyne Street on Thursday 26 January 2023 between 8am and 8pm. Gardyne Street, St Thomas Street and Yanko Avenue will be open to resident vehicle access only. Police officers will be on-site to direct traffic with support from Council officers.

A detour from Bronte Road to access Bronte Beach via Evans Street and Macpherson Street will be in place for the hours that the changes are in place. Click here for a map detailing the affected areas.
