Launch of the Charing Cross to Bronte Beach Heritage Walk
05 April 2022 | Council News
Waverley Council’s popular Charing Cross to Bronte Beach Heritage Walk now comes with a companion digital experience available on our website.
The new online audio-visual tour was designed by Council’s Urban Design and Heritage team to enhance the experience of the 2.5km walk through the Charing Cross Urban Conservation Area and surrounds.
Coupled with a PDF map, the Charing Cross to Bronte Beach Heritage Walk digital experience is great way to explore Waverley’s rich heritage and history through the stories of 22 famous and lesser-known locations, landmarks and people.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the walk aims to engage and educate residents and visitors about the importance of conserving and protecting Waverley’s heritage.
“A lot of research went into developing the Charing Cross to Bronte Beach Heritage Walk before the pandemic hit, and now that restrictions have eased, we excited to welcome more people on the walk,” Mayor Masselos said.
“Council is helping conserve our heritage through the establishment of Heritage Conservation Areas and initiative such as this walk, and I’m proud to say that our recent review of Waverley Council’s Heritage Policy resulted in several new Heritage Conservation Areas being added to the list as well as some individual addresses.”
Stops along the walk reveal the stories of many a notable Waverley resident including Australian National Anthem composer Peter Dodds McCormick, author Miles Franklin and opera star, Dame Joan Sutherland.
