Waverley Council invites you to celebrate NAIDOC Week at Centennial Parklands tomorrow, Friday 16 September, from 4pm- 6pm.

NAIDOC at Centennial Parklands is proudly delivered in collaboration with Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra Councils and Centennial Parklands and celebrates history, culture, and achievements of our First Nations peoples.

The event was planned for NAIDOC Week in July but was cancelled due to poor weather. A range of other events were held in Waverley during NAIDOC Week. See more here.

Tomorrow’s event includes an immersive welcome to country, storytelling by Brendan Moore and a dance performance by Brolgas Dance Academy.

At the closing of the event, families are invited to join the parkland’s Education Rangers on a guided spotlight tour of Lachlan Swamp or have a yarn around the campfire. Trixta the Barista will be serving hot beverages from 4pm.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Waverley Council is proud to help create and nurture equitable access and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in all spheres of life.

“Almost 10 years ago, Waverley Council adopted its first Reconciliation Action Plan which received the endorsement of Reconciliation Australia and reflects our commitment to reconciliation efforts and provides opportunities for exploring innovative and creative approaches to reconciliation locally and regionally,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Our vision for reconciliation is for Waverley to be a vibrant, resilient, caring, and inclusive community where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can practice and celebrate their culture and heritage proudly, are honoured for their survival and resilience, and supported to continue to overcome adversity and are respected and acknowledged as First Nations peoples with the right to determine their own futures.

"Waverley Council will continue to value and protect our environment with respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ intrinsic relationship with the land and waters.

"We are especially proud to deliver our Elsa Dixon Aboriginal Employment Program for Aboriginal trainees to undertake their certificate level qualifications in school whist gaining work experience in a local government setting.”

NAIDOC Week at Centennial Parklands will be held at Loch Avenue South, Centennial Parklands (turn left from Dickens Drive).
