Contractor fined $4000 for dumping waste material at Bondi

All investigations into this illegal dumping incident have now concluded.

Three separate offenders have been issued penalty notices including $11,500 from the RID Squad and $4000 from Waverley Council Rangers.

The Sydney Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad has fined a contractor $4000 plus administration costs for dumping waste material on council land at Bondi.

Around 10 tonnes of clay, soil and dirt were dumped recently on a footpath and nature strip outside a residential property in Edward Street.

An eyewitness reported the incident to the RID Squad after seeing a vehicle reverse onto the nature strip and unload the contents of the vehicle.

The RID Squad cordoned off the site and worked with the Waverley Council Compliance team to track down the alleged offender.

The quick-thinking eyewitness recorded the vehicle’s registration number which lead to the driver of the vehicle being identified and issued with a Clean-up Notice. Under the supervision of the RID Squad, the offender returned to the site to remove all the illegally dumped waste which was blocking a driveway and the footpath.

The offender was issued with $4000 fine under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act for causing a water pollution incident. Stormwater can pick up sediments that are not naturally found in our waterways and cause major pollution problems including toxic algal blooms.

The Sydney RID Squad are a team of experienced investigators working for local councils and authorised under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act to prevent and combat illegal dumping. It is supported by the NSW Environment Protection Authority with funding from the waste levy.
