A new place to charge your electric vehicle in Sydney’s east

Electric vehicle owners now have a new place to charge their vehicles in the Bondi Junction commercial centre with the installation of an on-street public electric vehicle charging station in Spring Street.

The public charging station outside the Mill Hill Community Centre is the eighth charging station to be installed in Sydney’s east by Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils as part of its award-winning Eastern Suburbs Electric Vehicle Charging Network.

The public charging stations are run on 100% renewable energy and are compatible with all models of EVs.

Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils have installed on-street EV charging stations at other key destinations including:

  • Bondi Beach car park (Queen Elizabeth Drive, Bondi Beach
  • Rose Bay (Cnr Norwich and Richmond roads)
  • Kiaora Place Shopping Centre, Double Bay
  • Brook Street, Coogee Oval
  • Randwick Community Centre
  • Silver Street car park, Randwick
  • Des Renford Aquatic Centre, Maroubra

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said there had been an increasing use of the three Councils’ EV charging stations since the first charging station was launched in June 2019 at Bondi Beach.

“Since being installed on World Environment Day on June 5 2019, the usage of our charging station network has more than tripled, with some of our more popular sites averaging three charging sessions per day. In total our network has been used for more than 2,000 hours and distributed more than 14,000 kWh of renewable electricity to EV motorists,” said Mayor Masselos.

“We are delighted to be giving motorists the opportunity to make a more sustainable choice whilst supporting our popular shopping precincts and tourist destinations.”

Mayor of Woollahra, Susan Wynne, said the Eastern Suburbs Electric Vehicle Charging Network is a positive nod for residents who are considering purchasing an EV for their next car.

“It is good to know that this choice and investment will be supported by their local council and that their local council is committed to a sustainable future for future generations,” said Mayor Wynne.

Mayor of Randwick, Danny Said, said as EV sales continue to rise in Australia, Councils like Randwick are helping support this low emissions motoring transformation alongside other active and public transport options.

“Our Council is delighted by the success of the on-street EV charging network and we are continuing to explore more charging stations in future, with an eye on locations around higher density areas where parking for EVs is currently limited,” said Mayor Said.

The initiative won the NSW Local Government Excellence Award for Innovative Leadership and Management in July last year.
